September 15, 2021

If you looked at an aerial photo of Sarasota, FL, with its blue-green waters of various depths, outlines of coral reefs and miles and miles of beautiful beaches on the Gulf of Mexico, you'd quickly realize that there's great fishing pretty much everywhere. It's literally as easy as walking out on the beach, or a pier, or hopping in a boat and casting your line. In this article, we'll outline just a few of our favorite spots in Sarasota for fishing, but we encourage you to explore and find the places that you love the best!

Best Places to Fish in Sarasota, FL

Inshore/Offshore Fishing: Big Sarasota Pass | New Pass

Charter a fishing boat or rent one if you know what you're doing and head to the deep grass flats to fish for redfish, spotted seatrout, sheepshead, Jack Crevalle, snook, pompano, and other species that feed on the shrimp and crabs in these areas.

Deep Sea Fishing: Venice | Nokomis | Englewood | Osprey | Siesta Key | Longboat Key

Unless you are a seasoned pro and know how to reel in the big ones, book a deep sea fishing expedition with an experienced crew. Head out for the day to search for mahi, wahoo, marlin, sailfish, tuna, swordfish, and even barracuda. These fish love spending time in the offshore boat wreckage so it's important to know just where to go and what to expect if you may be hauling in a fish that weighs a hundred pounds or more.

Pie Fishing: Tony Saprito Pier | Whitaker Gateway Park | Rod Reel Pier | Bird Key Park

Sarasota has many piers that offer fantastic fishing and beautiful views of the water, especially at sunset. Some are modern, concrete structures with benches and shaded areas; others are rustic, wooden, and time-worn. The fishing for pompano, speckled trout, snapper, and flounder is great at any of them.

Surf Fishing: Lido Key | Longboat Key | Anna Maria Island | Siesta Key

If the family wants to go to the beach but you have your heart set on fishing - no problem! Sarasota has 30 miles of beaches and many of them are quite popular for surf fishing or casting your line right from the shore. Fishing here is best in the spring and summer but it's best to go first thing in the morning before it gets too hot. Check local listings for any tide precautions but you can expect to catch grouper, snapper, snook, and speckled trout among others.

Before you hit the water at any of these locations, keep in mind that a Florida fishing license is required to catch certain types of fish and there are regulations on which fish you may keep and which should be released. Fishing regulations are strictly enforced so make sure you do your research and find out which license you should purchase. GoOutdoorsFlorida.com is a good resource.
